Fun is irresistible.
Look at any little kid and you'll realize how important fun is. Before the reality of adulthood sets in with its major life decisions, financial burdens, complex relationships, and so on... we care pretty deeply about fun. And for kids, it's not just about fun activities - it's about making everything fun. Fun is an adjective that can be added to anything, even the most mundane tasks.
And that's something we sometimes lose as we grow up. Fun is something we do at certain times, and all the other times are serious, important, or something with a lot less smiles.
But the reality of our new lives in Christ is that if the joy of our redemption is all-pervasive... and fun is an outcome of that joy. And that's not just because fun is an important spiritual tool or something. It's because when you strip away the worry, weight, and stress of lives without hope, you get down to the root of how God designed us. And that happens to look a lot like a smile and a laugh.
So fun is an indication of the joy we have in Christ, but it is also an important discipline that we can train ourselves in - especially when we gather in circles.
Fun helps us shed the burdens that God is asking us to cast on him.
Fun helps us right-size the problems in our life by realizing that they don't own every minute that we have.
Fun strengthens the bond between us, which in turn creates an important foundation for our movement toward God.
So make a joke. Play a game. Make sure that your circle is fun, light, and reflects the joy that we have because we have a God that loves us.
start the summer conversation
This is our second-to-last week of groups before summer break - which means it's the right time to make sure everyone knows what's coming! Try planning something fun for the week after the last group, or sometime in June. And see below for more thoughts on the summer and how to frame up the conversation of how your group can stay connected over the break!
Summer is coming! Check out the video above for some important info about summer break from groups!
Summer break is really important. But, it's a long time to go without meeting in our groups. But luckily, summer doesn't have to be one-size-fits-all.
THIS WEEK is the time to talk through the upcoming break with your group and figure out the best way to keep moving toward God together over the next 3 months. Lead your people through the questions below, and next week we will talk more about using people's thoughts and responses to make a summer game plan.
>>> questions to ask your group this week <<<
- What's your summer schedule look like? (have them bring some important dates next week)
- What part can each of us play in helping the group stay connected? (can someone host something? who can plan a party?)
- What's one way we'd like to move toward God together this summer? (a specific topic of interest to study, service projects, deeper friendships and accountability, helping each other reach out to friends, family, and neighbors, etc.)
a special gift is coming your way this week!
Watch your inbox later this week for an invite to something really special! It's called Right Now Media, and I think it's going to help you, your group members, and your group on the whole this summer! TONS more info coming next week!
