HABIT #5 | STAY FLEXIBLE
Picture some scenarios with me...
- Everyone's been having fun around the snacks for so long, they're having trouble transitioning to the "official" discussion.
- Totally unrelated to the content of the week, someone shares that he is in crisis, and doesn't know what to do next.
- Someone suggests that you cancel group... to go celebrate a group member's birthday together instead.
It's times like these that we bump into into a very important value that is hard to keep in focus. And that value is...
people > content
Now this doesn't mean that content is bad, that questions are useless, or that we shouldn't be engaging in discussion around the ideas that we are grappling with from Sundays! But the questions are not so much a format and outline as they are your tools for leading a group. The discussion isn't your group... the people are your group!
It all comes back to the reason Mission Groups exist:
to help people connect relationally and grow spiritually
Or how I like to think of it...
to help people connect relationally SO THAT THEY CAN grow spiritually
Let's keep that at the forefront this week as we lead our people well by creating environments that are always directed toward creating deeper relationships that are moving each other toward God and life well lived with Him!
great facilitators talk the least
Sometimes it can feel like we need to “seed” the conversation as leaders, or get it rolling. Or, we feel like we should comment often to point all the helpful or insightful things we hear. But as facilitators (and not teachers), it’s a huge win when we do so much listening... we find that we’ve talked the least. And if we make that our goal, we will start getting more and more creative with ways to get our people engaged in the conversation.
