Our Spring Session of Mission Groups is here! This session in the Weekly Resource, we will be looking at some marks of "irresistible community". Our goal in Mission Groups is to help people connect relationally to grow spiritually; we believe that intentional life in circles move us toward God! Let's all work toward making our circles, and the relationships that form them, as irresistible as possible!
safe circles where we can explore life with God together... are irresistible.
The world around us isn't safe. Social media is a chopping block for our ideas and decisions. Gossip is not just common; it's almost expected. Judgment and criticism are natural reactions to people who are different than us. The world around us isn't safe.
So think about the alternate option that people are presented with when they step into our living rooms for an hour and a half:
- posturing and posing aren't just discouraged; they're not allowed.
- what is said, asked, and discovered isn't just welcomed; it's protected.
- shared mistakes, confessions, questions, and doubts aren't just allowed; they're celebrated.
That kind of room is what we all long for. A place where our real selves can be known and loved, just as God loves us.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer said that “the companionship of a fellow Christian is a physical sign of the gracious presence of God.” Let's create rooms full of grace that physically display that gracious presence of God.
CALL → TEXT → EMAIL
Whether your people are new or returning, reach out personally to each person in your group before the first meeting! Breaks are good and useful, but sometimes it takes a little extra care to bridge the gap between sessions.
It's amazing how meaningful a personal invitation is. Even if someone is already committed to coming, or they know all the details, or they've been invited before... that extra reach-out means the world. It helps, too, to use the above rule of thumb about media richness! Calling is the most personal, texting is more likely to get to them, and email is good as a last follow-up.
let's stay focused on the goal this week!
Focus in this week on getting to know each other if you have new folks, and getting re-connected if you've just got returning people! Guilt is a heavy topic... don't feel like you have to get all the way to a deeply personal level of conversation in the first week of a session! Go where God and the conversation leads, and be sensitive to the level of trust and openness that you have or have to build up in your group!
