Ask everyone to share with the group anything they feel comfortable sharing:
- Where they’re from
- Vocation/how they spend their time
- How they heard about Mission
- What kept them coming back to Mission
- What their involvement at Mission has been so far (volunteer? other group? Free Friday Flicks/Night to Remember?)
- What they hope to get out of this their group experience
>>> LEADER TIP: STAY HERE AWHILE!
This should take the majority of the discussion time this week - probably around 30 minutes! If it doesn't, and you don't end up talking the whole time, feel free to watch the video that previews the homework and next week's discussion and then end early!
>>> LEADER TIP: INTRODUCING THE GROUP STATEMENT
In a new group, it's important to explain why we read the group statement before our discussion. Explain that it's a set of "ground rules" that helps us all ensure that everyone feels safe to share and be "for each other".
Let everyone know that you'll gently correct someone when they "break the rules" - it's not a huge deal or problem, so don't make a big deal about it! Safety is huge deal - make it everyone's responsibility to keep the circle safe for everyone to share, no matter what it is.
If it helps, ask if everything makes sense and have a quick discussion about anything that is unclear!
We are a group of imperfect people pursuing a perfect God. We exist to help each other find and follow Christ. These are some things we want to be true of our group:
We create a safe and honest environment, staying transparent and authentic.
We keep it inside the circle. Confidentiality is necessary for a healthy group.
We look together to the Bible for help and guidance, and keep out our own politics, sales, or agendas.
We do not try to fix each other, preach sermons, or give unsolicited advice. We instead encourage, listen to, and celebrate each other.
We handle conflict between us quickly and honestly by going to the person, owning our part, and practicing forgiveness.
We respect each others’ time by starting and ending when we say we will.
We trust that it is God’s role to change people, not ours.
We believe that in Jesus Christ, there is hope for everyone.
>>> LEADER TIP: Videos start next week!
The videos this session will set up your discussion and debrief the homework you did the previous week. They're all around 10 minutes long.
Let your group know how the videos will work, and watch the "Study Trailer & Info" video if you want a quick 1-minute intro!
>>> LEADER TIP: Explain the Discussion Time First!
Spend a few minutes talking through how this will work! Make sure to point everyone to Amazon to buy the book (if they need help, let your coach know and we will try to help!)
Starting this week, we'll all read "Question 1: Where Am I?" - it's only a few pages of reading, with some discussion questions to answer before our next meeting. Reading and answering will help us get the most out of our discussion time since things will have time to really sink in. Make sure to carve out a few minutes to do them! But even if you don't, still come to group!
- What are you hoping to get out of this group experience or study?
- Who are your main male role models in life? What have they taught you about how to be a man?
Question 1: Where Am I?
Use the last 15 minutes of group to ask if anyone has any prayer requests and close in prayer. Send around the prayer requests out to the group so everyone can be praying throughout the week.
