Saturday 11/12

Read Philippians 2:12-13

  • Most translations begin verse 12 with “Therefore” or “So then”, implying verse 12 naturally follows what came before.  How are verses 12-13 related to 2:1-11?

  • Review Philippians 1:6 where Paul assures us of his confidence that God is doing a good work in us and will complete it. In verses 12-13 we are challenged to “work hard to show the results of your salvation” or some translations say “work out your own salvation”.  Is this a contradiction?  How is working out your salvation different from working for it?

  • How do you interpret “obeying God with deep reverence and fear.”?

  • In verse 13 we see that God is at work and he is giving us both the desire and the power to what pleases him. Why is it so important to remember this? What comfort do you find in knowing that pleasing God is not left solely to your own power and ability?

12 Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. 13 For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.
